I thought this was a stunning production. The cast were all wonderful and the singing combined vocal purity and power with intelligence and emotion. Worthy of any west end stage!
I saw Sunday in the Park this past week when visiting Edinburgh. I am a huge Sondheim fan and it was already my favourite musical, but this cast made me love it ten thousand times more. Their voices were beautiful, their performances were unshakeably honest and moving, and the show somehow managed to be faithful to and pay homage to the original production while also providing a new, fresh look at the story and the songs. I was so inspired by this production. Wonderful, wonderful job. Please come tour in Canada!
As a Sondheim geeky groupie I went along to Sunday in the Park with George with a mixture of excitement and scepticism: How could a semi-professional production pull off such a complex and unconventional musical?
My former feeling cancelled out the latter – this production pulled it off with panache.
Strong performances coupled with highly impressive musical accompaniment help you forget that the cast are all so young. The character of George conveys the almost autistic focus of the artist perfectly with a haunted, determined, distracted gaze that reveals his tortured genius and his difficulty engaging with people.
And the character of Dot was simply stunning, bringing grace, humanity and pathos to the role to match actors twice her age.
Add to that the competency and mellifluous voices of the ensemble and – bit by bit, they put it together wonderfully. See it.
I am writing this in October; I still tingle when I recall my family’s total enjoyment of Sunday in the Park. I bought the original cast recording and it is, frankly, no better than the superlative production we enjoyed in Edinburgh. Thank you all for such a memorable experience!
